Suffragists and Hunger Strikes

The peaceful wing of the women's suffrage movement, the National Union of Women's Suffrage Societies (NUWSS), took a markedly different approach under Millicent Fawcett's leadership. Their methods focused on constitutional means of protest.

Vocabulary: Suffragists - Members of the NUWSS who advocated for women's voting rights through peaceful means.

Example: A massive procession in June 1908 drew over 300,000 protesters, demonstrating the movement's growing strength.

The practice of hunger strikes became a powerful weapon in the suffragette arsenal, beginning with Marion Wallace Dunlop in 1909. This tactic forced the government to respond with the controversial Cat and Mouse Act.

Definition: The Cat and Mouse Act (1913) allowed for the temporary release of hunger-striking prisoners to recover before returning to complete their sentences.

World War I Causes and MANIA Framework
